Fewer people are searching for skateboards and skateparks online than ever before, as shown by the fact that Google searches for skateboards are declining.
Industry studies show that participation in skateboarding has dropped across almost every age group, including young people.
Skate participation has decreased. Over the past ten years, skateparks have been less crowded than ever.
Skate companies are shutting down.
Google searches for “skateparks” between 2004 and 2025 fell by more than 85%, which may indicate that fewer people are skateboarding. Tampa Skate Park experienced a 38% decrease in skate sessions between 2004 and 2012.
Fewer people are visiting online directories for skatepark locations. Websites like Skatepark.com and SkateboardPark.com have seen declining traffic since 2013, according to specialized web analytics.
Google searches for “skateboarding” have dropped by 90%.
A similar trend is happening with snowboarding, skateboarding’s “stepchild”; Google searches have fallen by 90%. Burton, a major snowboard‑product developer, is struggling to move beyond being a snowboard‑only brand and reposition itself as a broader lifestyle brand.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t easy news to swallow. We’re not here to bury skateboarding, but to shed light on its current state so it can bounce back.
Limited to the United States, this downward trend—present for nearly a decade—is not happening in parts of Europe, Japan, and China. Asia remains a growing market. The largest skatepark in the world opened in China, and skate shops are multiplying rapidly.

The Resilience of Skateboarding
Skateboarding recovered from a major decline in the late 1980s, and its history shows that it can thrive again. There are strong signs that skateboarding will not only survive but may even grow in popularity.
Emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and South America are likely to become fertile ground for future skateboarding booms. In major nations like Russia, India, and Brazil, interest in skateboarding is far more stable and shows no significant signs of decline.
Additionally, there are ways in which skateboarding enthusiasts can help foster and strengthen interest in the sport.
